How to Free Up Storage Space on Your Android Phone

"Storage almost full" usually appears at the worst moment, often halfway through installing a game update. Here's how to get space back without losing anything important.

1. Find out what's using the space

Open Settings → Storage. Android breaks usage down into apps, images, videos, audio and system. Start with the largest category.

2. Use Files by Google

The free Files by Google app suggests junk files, duplicate photos, large videos and old downloads you can delete safely. Most phones recover a few gigabytes on the first pass.

3. Clear app caches, not app data

In Settings → Apps, open a large app and tap Storage & cache → Clear cache. That removes temporary files without logging you out. Avoid Clear storage unless you're happy to reset the app.

4. Archive apps you rarely use

Recent versions of the Play Store can archive apps: the app is removed but your data and its icon stay, and it reinstalls with one tap. Turn on automatic archiving under Play Store → Settings → General.

5. Move photos and videos to the cloud

Back up your camera roll with Google Photos (or another cloud service), then use Free up space to remove local copies that are already safely backed up.

6. Watch out for messaging apps

WhatsApp, Telegram and similar apps save every photo, video and voice note you receive. Their built-in storage managers show the biggest chats and let you clear media in bulk.

7. Remove offline downloads

Offline maps, playlists, podcasts and streaming downloads add up quickly. Check Spotify, YouTube, Netflix and Google Maps for content you no longer need.

Aim to keep at least 10–15% of your storage free. Phones slow down and updates fail when storage is almost full.
